The Legend
For most of history, green tea was either the noble's whisked powder or a murky brown brew the common people could barely enjoy. Then, in 1738, a tea farmer named Nagatani Sōen of Ujitawara spent years perfecting a new method — steaming the fresh leaf, then rolling it by hand over a heated bed until it dried into glossy green needles.
The result was sencha: emerald in the cup, sweet and alive, and within reach of everyone. They say it changed how a whole nation drank. Our Asatsuyu cultivar — “morning dew” — is the rare leaf so naturally sweet it is called a sencha that dreams of being gyokuro.
